#52: From “Who Am I?” to “Here I Am”: Unlocking the Leader Within

“Who am I?”

It’s a question every leader asks at some point. Whether you’re navigating the demands of leadership and life or stepping into a leadership role for the first time, this question can feel deeply personal and, at times, overwhelming.

You’re not alone. Many leaders feel this way, especially when faced with the pressure to perform, inspire, and make an impact. And yet, most leadership programs focus on strategies, frameworks, and tactics—leaving you to figure out your identity on your own.

But here’s the truth: leadership doesn’t start with strategy. It starts with self-awareness and authenticity.

Why Authenticity Is the Foundation of Leadership

Leadership isn’t about trying to fit into a mold or performing to meet others’ expectations. It’s about showing up as your true self—your strengths, your values, and your vision for the difference you want to make.

Authenticity doesn’t mean being perfect. It means being real. It means giving yourself permission to lead in a way that feels aligned with who you truly are, not who you think you’re supposed to be.

Dr. Tasha Eurich, organizational psychologist and author of *Insight*, describes self-awareness as the “meta-skill of the 21st century.” Her research shows that while 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only 10-15% actually are.

This gap can feel disheartening, but it’s also an opportunity. Eurich’s work reveals two types of self-awareness that, when cultivated, become the foundation for authentic leadership:

1. **Internal self-awareness**: This is your ability to clearly see your own values, passions, and aspirations. It’s about knowing what drives you and aligning your decisions and actions with your core purpose.

2. **External self-awareness**: This is understanding how others perceive you. It’s about recognizing the impact you have on those around you and using that insight to build trust and foster meaningful relationships.

Eurich’s research also reveals a comforting truth: self-awareness is a skill that can be developed. The most effective leaders don’t start out perfectly self-aware—they commit to building it over time, cultivating both clarity and courage along the way.

Why Healthcare, Government, and Nonprofit Leaders Need This

In sectors like healthcare, government, and nonprofits, authenticity and self-awareness are essential because trust, purpose, and empathy are at the heart of the work.

- Trust is Non-Negotiable: Leaders in these fields make decisions that directly impact lives. Authenticity builds the trust required to inspire teams, stakeholders, and communities.

- Purpose Drives Action: These sectors are fueled by mission. Leaders who align their personal “why” with their organization’s purpose can inspire others and sustain their own energy.

- Empathy is Key: Whether serving patients, constituents, or vulnerable populations, leaders in these fields must connect on a human level. Self-awareness helps foster deeper understanding and inclusivity.

By leading authentically, leaders in these sectors create greater impact, stronger relationships, and more sustainable success.

The Cost of Inauthentic Leadership

When you feel pressure to conform or hide parts of yourself, it can be exhausting. And over time, the cost of abandoning authenticity adds up:

- You lose trust. Your team can sense when you’re not being genuine, which can erode connection and credibility.

- You feel misaligned.Pretending to be someone you’re not creates internal tension and burnout.

- You limit your impact. Trying to lead like someone else prevents you from fully leveraging your unique strengths.

Simon Sinek, author of *Start with Why*, offers an encouraging perspective: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”

When you’re clear on your “why”—the purpose that drives you—you lead with authenticity and inspire others to follow, not because they have to, but because they believe in what you stand for.

The Mindset Shift: From Fear to Fascination

As you work toward greater self-awareness, you may find that fear creeps in—fear of judgment, fear of not being “enough,” or fear of failure. This is normal, but it doesn’t have to hold you back.

If fear is the voice keeping you small, fascination is the mindset that sets you free.

Fascination, as developed by Sally Hogshead in her work on personal branding, is about discovering what makes you uniquely captivating to others. It’s not about changing who you are—it’s about amplifying the best of who you already are.

When you shift from fear to fascination, you:

- Stop overthinking and start trusting yourself.

- Replace people-pleasing with purpose-driven leadership.

- Lead with confidence and ease, knowing your unique traits are your greatest asset.

Fascination allows you to stop trying harder and instead focus on being smarter—leveraging your natural strengths to build trust, connection, and impact.

A Supportive Reflection for Authentic Leadership

If you’re ready to explore what authenticity looks like for you, take 15 minutes to reflect on these three questions:

1. **What do I stand for?**

- What values guide my decisions and actions?

- Are these values reflected in how I lead my team?

2. **What makes me different?**

- What strengths and qualities set me apart as a leader?

- How can I lean into these natural abilities more intentionally?

3. **Am I leading with alignment?**

- Are my decisions, actions, and goals aligned with who I truly am?

- If not, what small adjustments could I make to feel more authentic in my leadership?

These questions aren’t about finding the “right” answers—they’re about connecting with yourself and creating clarity around what matters most to you.

From “Who Am I?” to “Here I Am”

The journey to authentic leadership isn’t about striving for perfection. It’s about transformation.

When you reflect on your values, embrace your strengths, and shift from fear to fascination, you begin to lead with clarity and confidence. You move from asking “Who am I?” to boldly declaring, “Here I am.”

Authenticity is your foundation. Fascination is your superpower.

Leave a spark wherever you go. ✨
