#66: Leading Like You: How Emerging Leaders Turn Clarity Into Action
SHiNE Forward: Leading Like You - The Series
Week 1: From Mindshift to Momentum
Welcome to the Series
Do you ever feel like the way you're expected to lead doesn’t match who you truly are? Like you’re caught between caring deeply and being asked to perform leadership in ways that don’t feel right?
You care. You want to make an impact.
But you’re not interested in performing leadership. You want to lead in a way that’s clear, aligned, and true to who you are—even if you’re still figuring out what that looks like.
This series, SHiNE Forward: Leading Like You, is here to guide you through the tension—to help you lead with clarity, alignment, and purpose.
What You’ll Get in This Series
Each post will offer you:
- Language for what you’re experiencing but haven’t been able to name.
- Tools and questions to help you move from inner clarity to outer confidence.
- Stories and ideas to remind you that leadership isn’t a one-size-fits-all script—it’s something you define for yourself.
This week, we’re tackling a common frustration:
Why do we feel stuck after a breakthrough—and how do we get moving again?
Why Mindshifts Alone Don’t Create Change
A powerful insight can feel like a spark—an “aha moment” that makes everything seem possible.
But what happens after? Do you feel stuck, like your clarity isn’t translating into action?
You’re not alone.
As leadership scholar Herminia Ibarra explains:
“We learn who we are by testing reality, not by introspection.”
In other words, you don’t need more thinking—you need more trying.
Imagine this:
You’ve realized you want to lead with more transparency, but the culture around you still values silence.
Or maybe you’ve decided to prioritize empathy, but the system rewards speed over connection.
You’ve changed internally—but the world around you hasn’t.
The “In-Between”—Where Most Leaders Feel Stuck
This is the in-between:
- You’re no longer who you were.
- You’re not yet fully living into who you’re becoming.
- And the structures, habits, and expectations around you haven’t shifted to match your growth.
It’s like being a seedling breaking through the soil. You’ve outgrown the old but haven’t yet fully stretched into the light.
This isn’t failure—it’s part of the process.
As Parker Palmer reminds us:
“Wholeness is not about perfection. It’s about integration—the meeting of shadow and light within us.”
Each time you return to your truth, even when external systems don’t immediately change, you reinforce your clarity and courage.
How to Build Momentum Without Overwhelm
Breakthroughs often tempt us to sprint forward with big, dramatic changes. But here’s the truth:
You don’t need speed. You need consistency.
Leadership isn’t about rushing to prove yourself—it’s about returning to what’s true, over and over again.
Here’s how to start:
🧭 Three Practical Ways to Start Moving Forward
These aren’t “tips.” They’re invitations to experiment, reflect, and grow.
1. Act on What You Already Know
The gap between insight and action often comes from staying stuck in old patterns. Ask yourself:
- “Where in my leadership am I thinking differently, but still doing the same?”
Example:
You’ve realized that listening is one of your superpowers, but in meetings, you still feel pressured to speak up just to prove your value.
Take Action:
This week, during one meeting, intentionally lead by listening. Notice how it feels and how others respond.
2. Lead Like Your Signal Matters
Every leader has a natural way of showing up—a unique “signal” that makes them stand out. Tools like How to Fascinate® can help you name yours, but it starts with noticing where you already feel most like yourself.
Ask yourself:
- “Where did I feel most like myself this week—and how did others respond?”
Example:
Maybe you’re naturally detail-oriented and thrive when you bring clarity to complex situations. Lean into that. Instead of trying to be the loudest voice in the room, focus on how you bring calm and clarity to your team.
Take Action:
Find one opportunity this week to amplify your natural leadership signal.
3. Stop Waiting to Be ‘Ready’
Most people think confidence comes first. But confidence is a result, not a starting point.
Reframe Your Thinking:
Instead of:
- “I’ll act when I feel ready.”
Try:
- “I don’t need to be ready. I just need to be real.”
As Brené Brown reminds us:
“We don’t have to be perfect. We just have to show up.”
Example:
You’ve been holding back on giving feedback to a team member because you’re afraid it won’t come out perfectly.
Take Action:
This week, have the conversation—imperfectly. Focus on being honest and clear, not polished.
Reflect: What’s Holding You Back?
Take a moment to journal or think through these questions:
- What insight are you still trying to act on?
- Where are you holding back because you’re afraid it won’t be received well?
- What would leading like YOU actually look like this week?
